Polish rough sleepers helped by Brent Council

Rough sleepers in Neasden and Alperton are being offered a helping hand by Brent Council and its partners. There are five rough sleepers in Neasden and a further eight sleeping at an unused commercial unit in Alperton. All are believed to be EU citizens from Poland and will not be entitled to claim benefits or receive assistance from the state here in the UK. Iceland owes the UK £2.2 billion

The UK is owed £2.2 billion by Iceland after the Treasury stepped in to guarantee British deposits in collapsed bank Icesave, it was disclosed today. The figure was the amount paid to Icesave to cover Britons' savings when its parent company Landsbanki went into receivership last month, a Treasury official said. The Government has refused to release a detailed report into the mistakes made by authorities in the Baby P case. A serious case review was carried out after the little boy died in a blood-splattered cot in Haringey, north London, in August last year. GMB: councils must budget for pay rise

A leading trade union is to write to local authorities across the country urging them to agree a pay rise for their workers at least in line with inflation in 2009 following a protracted row over wages this year. The GMB said it believed councils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland could afford a decent pay increase next year, urging them to include higher pay rates in any budgets being set now.
